Here are a few notes that I got off the video. You really needed to listen to what they were saying to understand the math and science that they discussed. Here we go.......

Jenny's book were equations for archeology finds on carbon dating.  Archeology is the study of artifacts which lead to clues which lead to a time period/dating which leads to history which leads to equations and a solution to all sorts of questions. Carbon Dating is the calculating of objects and their age. All living things contain Carbon and atoms to decay. Radioactive decay is measured in exponentional form (meaning x squared and can be graphed by increasing). You need to expand your defintion of archeology, but this was a start.

The ice cube example said if a tray holds 50 cubes total and we use 5 a day. The water supply replaces based on the subtraction of 50 and the total missing divided by 5. This gives a clear equation and results in a linear equation (functions and plug number in for x and solve. hence the straight line when graphed).

Archeology is based on perimeters and discoveries with geography. Cheif Clearwater claimed that the older the artifact the more political views come into play. Meaning Native Americans were always said to be the first settled people, but this skull says otherwise which questions the existence of who the first inhabitants were. (Hence the right to land and money which jeopardizes casino use).

The skull was used to create measurements of fragments to calculate what habitats this person lived through. They used the measurements/volume of the skull on the eyes and nose, etc. to see what type of person it was. Race can't be calculated, but if a nose was wide and eyes tight..indicated breathing issues in cold climates and squinted (maybe wind). These clues lead to locations and possible settlements of people.

Dr. Hills stole records of water current data from Mr. Clearwater to describe past plant life and populations studies to determine a settlement process (living) and where Native Americans were. Charlie discussed the hamburger sample this way. If one restaruant is located near a group of people, others are built to meet the needs of people further away hence building a chain of restaurants and more settlement options.

Mr. Clearwater told the guard that night to stay away from Jennifer because he was going to murder her. Why? The guard's mother was disenrolled (taken out of getting money from the tribe claiming not enough family ties) and said the name would be put back on the tribal list again if this skull disappeared and Jennifer for studying it. The cheif was mad that the attorney was treating the tribe like a coorporation. It was all about the money and not the heritage like it use to be and should be. The skull would open land rights and money disputes with the US government and based on the history of these two parties, they don't want to go there.

The governement has never been compassionate to Native Americans over the many years. I took a college class on this and we still to this day take so many things away that we use land rights/gaming rights as a small way to repay the damage the US did over the years. You know the story of Native Americans and Europeans.......well, over time we took everything away and forced them to reservations even still today. These living conditions are terrible and simplistic. The US gave them land rights to build casinos. They don't pay taxes because all money they make the tribe gets portions of it. It is used to disperse over the members of the tribe for food, clothing, etc. These casinos are located in the middle of no where because the US doesn't want people to be around them (living) as a fear that the public will not invest in government things or the economy and the US gets nothing out of the casinos money wise. The further away the casino, the US thinks less will attend and less money "thrown away" that could be used to the benefit of the US. Las Vegas, Nevada is a large area where reservations are kept. No public people are allowed on lands owned by tribes if they don't want them too. There is so much more I could discuss on the history, but you need to do a little research yourself. After all this it is shocking how the US treated these people and even today the US doesn't acknowledge any wrong doing. It is a shame!

Archeology is making grids to located items (coordinate points) and using measurements to plug into equations to express how something decays over time. I think based on everything I said, you can come up with math things used in this video. The more I listened the more sense it made. Hope this helps, but I do not want cut and paste from you. Use this info to come up with your own way to explain things. Any copying will be plagarism. Warning!!!!!!!

Wow! I could keep going, but I think I will stop now. Amazing what one little show like this tells so much! See what you learn in math, science, and history has a purpose!

Wow... thats a lot of words. I'm horrified that you could wright that much about an hour long show. At least it will be easier for us to do our Numb3rs worksheet.

Ms. Burley, What are te numbers in Jenny's book again? I know that you said carbon dating equations, But what exactly is that?
